Improving ecological data science with workflow management software

چکیده

Pressing environmental research questions demand the integration of increasingly diverse and large-scale ecological datasets as well complex analytical methods, which require specialized tools resources. Computational training for evolutionary sciences has become more abundant accessible over past decade, but tool development outpaced availability training. Most scripted analyses focuses on individual analysis steps in one script rather than creating a pipeline, where modular functions comprise an ecosystem interdependent steps. Although current computational creates excellent starting place, linear styles scripting can risk becoming labor- time-intensive less reproducible by often requiring manual execution. Pipelines, however, be easily automated or tracked software to increase efficiency reduce potential errors. Ecology evolution would benefit from techniques that these risks managing pipelines modular, readily parallelizable format with clear documentation dependencies. Workflow management (WMS) aid reproducibility, intelligibility pipelines. To date, WMS adoption ecology been slow. We discuss benefits challenges implementing illustrate its use through case study targets r package further highlight workflow automation, dependency tracking improved clarity reviewers. requires familiarity function-oriented programming careful planning advanced applications pipeline sharing, investment will enable access impart transferable computing skills facilitate data science at large scales.

Improving Emergency Responsiveness with Management Science

W the goal of OR/MS is to aid decision makers, implementation of published models occurs less frequently than one might hope. However, one area that has been significantly impacted by management science is emergency response systems. Dozens of papers on emergency service management appeared in the OR/MS literature in the 1970s alone, many of which were published in Management Science. Three of ...

Redefining ecological science using data

cology is the study of life and its interactions with the physical environment. Because climate change requires rapid adaptation, new data analysis tools are essential to quantify those changes in the midst of high natural variability. Ecology is a science in which studies have been performed primarily by small groups of individuals, with data recorded and stored in notebooks. But large synthes...

Improving a Workflow Management System with an Agent Flavour

This paper discusses an application of software agents to improve workflow management systems, with a practical emphasis on Petri net-based systems. The properties of agent technology will be used to gain advantages within the workflow management systems on both a conceptual and practical level. In this paper we discuss the theoretical background of our work, the conceptual idea and approach an...

Improving Network Management with Software Defined Networking

Network Management is very challenging. The Maintenance, operating and providing a secured communication network is very complex. It requires the network operators to grapple low-level vendor specific configurations to implement the high level network policies which are complex. The rigidity of underlying infrastructure presents few possibilities of improvement or innovation, since network devi...
